By Risidra Mendis

A foreigner and his wife were produced before Elpitiya Magistrate yesterday for illegally collecting insects in and around the Sinharaja Forest.

Peter Martin and his wife from Slovakia were seen collecting insects and ants at Kurundugaha Hathamma at Sinharaja by eyewitnesses, who had then reported the matter to the police.

Martin and his wife are believed to be entomologists. They were apprehended on the highway by the police, who found the insects in their vehicle.

I wonder why people do this ?

very simple, money. The Netherlands is one of the biggest markets for exotic insects, amphibians,  reptiles etc for the pet trade. If you notice most of the people caught are Dutch. Also famous for orchids and fish.  The Gloriosa Superba (or niagala) is actually registered there, so if we want to commercially exploit it, we have to pay some one in the Netherlands royalty.

There is also the angle of, who knows what they might be useful for? cancer?? HIV??. The first to discover it can make billions

oh, I forgot. Why are there more detection's? The villages and people are more alert to it. And in 90% of the cases, it's them who have apprehended. The respective departments are no where to be seen
