This is the board for you to share the electronic maps you have developed, with the community. We encourage you to use KML as the standard file format for this purpose.

Learn more about KML in this post - Using KML files to share Google Earth information

If your maps are in a different file format (say Garmine Mapsource format), you can use this simple application to covert those files to KML. You can use this same application to convert the KML files from this board to other formats to be used in GPS devices etc.

In your KML files, please differentiate between information that you have gathered first hand using a GPS device, from any information you have plotted by studying maps or using approximations. You can simple use two different, first level folders in your KML file to store these two types of information.

You can help trail maps grow

If you have location co-ordinates / routes that can enhance any of the trail maps posted here, please add those in KML files as replies to the particular thread. I'm sure the creator of the base trail map will be more than willing to add your locations/points to the map to make it more complete. This way, we will create a comprehensive set of more complete trail maps than what we can create as individuals.

Treat the earth well. It was not given to you by your parents. It was loaned to you by your children

Also it would be nice if Sri Lanka roads/trails are updated at http://www.openstreetmap.org/. OpenStreetMap is a free editable map of the whole world. We still need lot to update there for Sri Lanka. One advantage of this compared to google maps is that OpenStreetMap can be extracted and can be load in to most of GPS devices.

More information at http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Main_Page.
