Finally, camped in Delft...been wanting to since first going there in 2010.

Camped on the 'village side' as we had kids with us.

Plenty of very dry fire wood around. So easy to cook!

The best part was the sea...out of your sleeping bag and walk right in to watch sun rise with the water all around you ( sorry no photos - was enjoying the experience too much!).

The sky started changing colour ...I think, about 1hr or so before the sun actually rose out of the sea.
First light from the tent:

And the 'wild side' ...so so untouched.
The coast line is dramatic but you can't swim. No fresh water on this side. but is a manageable distance to the 'village side' . so can easily carry your water.

Hi Ind, Hari and Chatura,

Yes, it was lovely. I did not have my usual experienced campers for company and that created some hilarious situations  Grin

If anyone needs info on camping in Delft contact Amila - http://www.lakdasun.org/forum/index.php?topic=10696.0

HI
Really enjoyed your report on delft island camping trip. Few of us guys are considering a camping trip to delft. would be really grateful if you could impart some wisdom about the island and camping there. do we have o take some sort of permission from navy/police etc? how is  the ferry schedule? (from jaffna to delft and delft to jaffna).

cheers.
Sith

Hi Sith,

Ferry schedule - the RDA 'normal' ie free schedule leaves from the Nagadeepa jetty once in the morning and once in the evening. I can't remember the exact time but there is sufficinet time to come by bus from Jaffna to the jetty if you leave at least by 6am. There was also a free Navy ferry when the RDA ferry gets crowded. In addtion there are pvt boats that take people across - have not used it so don't know the cost
Permission - not sure if you really need permission but we informed them.
Best get in touch with amila - see link above. he sorted the logistics for us.  Suggest you camp on the 'wild side' - think the 'village side' is too crowded now.

all the best!
and remember - responsible travel and camping ethics!
