Significance: A stone inscription (12 x 14 feet) over 2,000 years old suggesting the use of money used for services rendered

This temple was originally a hiding place for King Valagambah. It is said that during his reign, King Valagambah had used many similar caves as hiding places which became a temples later on. Maahmpita is no exception. One of the highlights of this cave temple is the stone inscription measuring 12 by 14 feet. Being a little over 2000 years old, this stone inscription is one of the earliest records of money being used for services rendered. According to the inscription, a gem dealer by the name of Manikara had paid a village headman named Hudaka for some irrigation work. Unfortunately, more information on the stone inscription is not available due to the illegibility of the writing which has not been conserved and protected over time.

Significance: Beautiful and rare ‘Elephant lamp’

The Suthigara dagoba (a dome-shaped shrine that contains Buddhist relics) gets its name from the word suthikagaraya meaning place of birth. Queen Rathnavali gave birth to a baby boy in this exact location where the dagoba is located. This boy later became Parakramabahu the Great (1153-1186). Major renovations have not been carried out on this dagoba. However, weeds and damaged bricks are replaced whenever the necessity arise helping to maintain its ancient austere look. Over the years, excavations revealed that the dagoba is built on top of another smaller dagoba. The smaller dagoba found closer to the pesa walalu (concentric perimeter rings going around the dagoba) on the eastern side is 36 feet in diameter. The diameter of the bigger dagoba is 804 feet and 47 feet high.

Significance: Unusual species of bamboo that cannot be seen anywhere else in Sri Lanka

It is said that this was a beautiful garden that was at the centre of the Seethawaka kingdom of King Rajasinghe the 1st. It is said that while relaxing in the garden, the king had been pricked by a thorn from this unusual bamboo tree, which had fatally wounded him and killed him while he was being hurriedly ferried across the river in a copper paruwa (type of boat). Some say that it was the poison of the thorn, while others say the King’s Vedha mahaththaya’s (doctors) had poisoned him on the pretext of treating him in the boat. There are others that say that he was bitten by a snake and that it was not a thorn that killed him. Some say that being bitten by a cobra was divine retribution for the patricide he had committed for having turned his back on Buddhism.

Significance: Has a naturally built magnificent stone arch unlike any other cave system in Sri Lanka

According to folklore, when in hiding, King Valagamba had concealed 500 of his queens in this cave, which is how part of its name originated. Sthripura means a place full of women. Unlike any other cave in Sri Lanka, it has a magnificent natural stone arch at the entrance to the cave. About 250 years after the reign of king Valagamba, the cave was discovered by some Buddhist priest who converted it into a temple like in most cases in Sri Lanka. There are a network of tunnels inside the cave which was designed for the king to escape

Significance: Highest content of minerals in water(Heaviest) found in Sri Lanka

The history of this temple to this day is not written, but passed on from generation to generation as folklore. Situated in the village of Nikawalamulla and built in a rock cave. The reclining Buddha is under the rock and is said to be built sometime during the reign of King Valagumbah. An interesting highlight of this temple is, the natural spring that flows behind the temple, according to folklore, has the heaviest water in Sri Lanka. In other words, the water here has an extremely high content of minerals. It is also said that the fiercest of droughts have not been able to dry the stream.
