Significance: The Oldest Silk Cloth in Asia was found at this site

5 km North of Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage lies a quiet and peaceful temple without much hue and cry amidst the lush green paddy fields. Even though the appearance may not look so posh and lavish, the compound holds much significance for three ample reasons. First, climbing the narrow flight of stairways 40 – 50 feet up from the base of the temple premises lies the very place where one of the greatest Kings of Sri Lanka – Parakramabahu 1 The Great was said to be born. Second, the building situated in the middle of the base which has an octagon shape holds the oldest silk cloth in Asia amongst the other valuables found inside the stupa during the excavations. Third, it is said that there are 3 ancient kota vehera’s in Sri Lanka. The pagoda at Yudhaganawa in Wellawaya, the pagoda at Dedigama (also known as “Suthigara Chaithya” in Kegalle) and the third in Deliwela.
